IT Network Engineer
SpaceX is looking for an experienced Network Engineer with deep knowledge and broad experience across networking technologies: LAN, MAN, WAN, wireless, firewalls, VPNs, content networking, etc. This employee will be a member of the Information Technology network team and will work with various functional areas on gathering requirements, evaluating, designing, implementing, and supporting networking solutions that support real-time telemetry, video, and voice across a wide range of complex architectures, platforms and mediums. The ideal candidate will be flexible and flourish in a fast paced and challenging environment. He or she should be a self-starter, self-motivator and possess ingenuity to excel at this position.
Responsibilities:
- Research, evaluate, design, plan, and integrate network technologies into a world-class network that meets the needs of the demanding SpaceX engineering team. Build highly-resilient, high-performance, scalable, and flexible systems.
- Look for ways to enhance to existing network services. Make recommendations, justify, and implement these improvements using an accepted change control methodology.
- Define, document and follow standards and best practices for network design, testing, and implementation.
- Configure, deploy, fine-tune, monitor, maintain, upgrade, troubleshoot, support and repair the network as required.
- Work within a diverse group to design and deliver creative solutions and resolve problems in a timely and proactive manner by interacting with internal business units.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science degree in a related field
- 5+ years of direct experience in network design and engineering.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Cisco CCNP/CCDP or CCIE/CCDE certifications preferred.
- Expertise in creating repeatable, reliable, scalable network architectures, with high availability, fault tolerance, performance tuning, monitoring, and statistics/metrics collection.
- Expert working knowledge (including the ability to setup, configure, upgrade, manage, and troubleshoot) routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, 802.11 wireless access points, and load balancers.
- Understanding of transport protocols, routing protocols, and security/authentication protocols at all layers of the OSI model with emphasis on TCP/IP are essential.
- Must have knowledge networking features and protocols such as spanning tree, ARP, CDP/LLDP, EIGRP/RIP/OSPF/BGP, VTP, EtherChannel/LAG/VCP, 802.1Q/tagging, HSRP/VRRP, QoS, multicast, 802.11, IPsec, RADIUS/TACACS+, SNMP.
- Must understand Quality of Service and how to classify traffic by COS, IP Precedence and DSCP as well as ingress/egress queuing and determination of buffer depth per stream type and Congestion Avoidance.
- Experience with and understanding of troubleshooting and monitoring tools for data, audio, and video streams on the network, including packet analyzers, SNMP monitoring tools, IP SLA, syslog, Cisco Prime, Ixia/Spirent equipment, etc.
- Experience supporting Windows and Linux products systems/applications on networking technologies. Certifications in Microsoft and Linux technologies a bonus.
- Experience with Cisco Voice technologies a bonus.
- Must be comfortable working with mission critical and sensitive systems, with a sense of urgency appropriate to the responsibilities
- Excellent communications skills with the ability to communicate with internal/external customers, vendors, management etc. in both formal and informal situations.
- Good project management, organizational and time management skills to handle multiple complex enterprise-scale complex projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills needed to team well with peers, customers, project managers, and vendors.
Additional Requirements:
- Be willing to travel when needed.
- A motivated self-starting personality, able to work independently while maintaining patience with constant interruptions and multiple requests.
- Ability to learn new things quickly, and need minimal direction.
- A high degree of creative ability, analytical and technical skills and independent judgment/decision making.
