Lead Mechanical Engineer | SpaceX

Space Exploration Technologies
Engineer The Future

SpaceX is a U.S.-based advanced technology company founded by residing CEO and CTO, Elon Musk. Founded in 2002, SpaceX builds rockets and spacecraft from the ground up, including cutting edge electronics, software, vehicle structures, and engine systems. The Falcon Launch Vehicle and Dragon Spacecraft programs are some of the most ambitious engineering systems in the world, designed to support our ultimate goals of aviation-like spaceflight capability and making humanity a multi-planet species. Our team is made up of more than 3,000 SpaceXers located across our Hawthorne, California headquarters; and other facilities in Florida, Texas, and Washington, DC.

Advance the course of human history and pave the way to Mars

This is SpaceX. We are not like most companies. Our goal is to do what has never before been done--enabling mankind to live on other planets. We push the boundaries of what is currently possible, and understand it takes rare individuals to help us make this happen. We celebrate our successes, and each other. We seek future colleagues with a rare mix of drive, passion, scrappiness, intelligence, and curiosity to seek what’s beyond the stars.

Playing a direct role in advancing the course of human history is no small endeavor.  Join us, and find your place in the SpaceX legacy.

Lead Mechanical Engineer- Structures

Responsibilities:

In the past decade SpaceX has been hard at work designing one of the most advanced rocket and spacecraft platforms ever flown.  We are now challenged with scaling our production rate to keep pace with our growing launch manifest that will soon reach a rate of more than one launch per month.  To meet our production goals, we must optimize the efficiency of our production process while meeting the highest quality standards.

Lead Mechanical Engineer will have a balance of management and individual contributor duties. Average split estimated to be 30-40% strategic management and 60-70% engineering duties.

Management duties:

  • Prioritization of incoming requests to ensure R&D and production has adequate support to meet critical milestones and production rates. Must be, strategic, flexible, and transparent when deciding which jobs will have the greatest positive impact for the company.
  • Assign prioritized jobs to best suited individual contributors on the team.
  • Coach individual contributors, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses to encourage future growth and capability.

Individual Contributor duties:

  • Develop production equipment for all products SpaceX including Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Cargo Dragon, and Crew Dragon.
  • Manage several different projects in a fast paced environment -- projects will vary in size and scale. Some examples: Rocket structure and propulsion component manipulation equipment, air bearing systems, robotic drilling solutions, friction stir weld machines, roadway transportation systems, static and dynamic fixturing, etc.
  • Design and analysis of critical mechanical systems for the production of SpaceX rockets and spacecraft.
  • Develop robust plans to ensure that our equipment and machine capacity is developed in line with volume production requirements.
  • Resolving manufacturing discrepancies and interfacing with the quality team to implement cost effective solutions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have Bachelor degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Candidate should have at least 2 years of professional experience in a mechanical design engineering role; recent graduates with strong mechanical engineering related project experience and internship experience will be considered.
  • Must have experience applying common manufacturing and machining processes where it applies to design (including mills, lathes, manual and CNC).
  • Must have structural analysis experience including the ability to perform hand calculations.
  • Must have experience designing mechanical systems using 3D CAD software.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly including experience taking products from development design to high-volume production.
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines including mills, lathes, manual and CNC; Hands-on machining experience preferred.
  • Solid understanding of welding processes with various materials including tig, mig, stick, orbital tube, and friction stir welding; Hands-on welding experience preferred .
  • Experience with Unigraphics (UGS/NX) and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems.
  • Bonus points for having experience with FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, ANSYS Workbench.
  • Bonus points for having experience with manufacturing process development, facility and line layouts, process failure mode effects analysis, and error proofing.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be detail oriented, organized, and demonstrate a high sense of urgency.
  • Ability to lift 25-30 lbs., lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position.
