Senior Director of Machining 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Machining strategy to support SpaceX goals of a ten fold increase in production output in the next 2 years
  • Develops and maintains routines to ensure delivery of Machining metrics in terms of on time delivery, Quality, cost and service for both Customer and R&D efforts
  • Minimizes company risk and maintains compliance in area of environment, health and safety
  • Identifies and develops talent within the organization
  • Develop capabilities and Machining initiatives to support continuously improving Machining performance over a multi-year horizon
  • Operate a highly dynamic, dependable and efficient Machining operation
  • Optimize entire Machining Model; consistently achieve service level, quality, and productivity goals.
  • Establish visibility, reporting and key performance metrics for all aspects of Machining, to ensure increase efficiencies and cost savings
  • Create collaborative business plans with strategic vendors and negotiates strategies and programs by developing and maintaining positive vendor relationships
  • Reviews vendor contract negotiations, guaranteeing the attainment of the most advantageous pricing, terms, discounts, allowances, quality, delivery, service and dating (where applicable). Ensures all goods and services meet established standards; addresses business unit complaints, requests, and questions and resolves within guidelines
  • Directly manages complex equipment negotiations with suppliers that require a detailed strategic plan and have a direct correlation with SpaceX’s operational needs goals.
  • Deep knowledge of advanced machining technology (horizontal / vertical / 5 Axis / Pallet Systems) and manufacturing procedures
  • Ability to modernize the machining approach, utilizing best practice and state of the art solutions to enable “lights-out” operations where appropriate. Experience of delivering these solutions as well as a track record of success in a fast paced machining environment, ideally serving the aerospace industry, is preferred.
  • Develops detailed "As-Is" process maps and assesses current process to deliver competitive value by maintaining a deep knowledge of industry best practices, automation solutions, and technology trends in field of expertise.
  • Ability to advance the operation with relevant tooling, software, equipment monitoring and automation solutions.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Significant previous accomplishments with world-class machining management and automated solutions.
  • Must be comfortable being hands-on but able to strategically move the business forward with confidence and speed of execution
  • Proven record of effective machining modernization with leading manufacturing enterprise, which operates in a high-volume, precision environment.
  • Experience implementing and working with equipment monitoring and automated pallet systems.
  • Excellent project management, team building and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to drive innovation, execute plans and to think creatively.
  • Agility to move between strategic and tactical operational issues.
  • Proven and established record for process design and implementation.
  • Machine programming experience in a multi-building or multi-site setting preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a senior Machining leadership position
  • Experience with development of in-house Enterprise and Material resource planning applications
  • Experience monitoring, tracking and continually improving processes
  • Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience bringing teams and processes from development to production
  • Bachelors Degree in Operations, Business or related field

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work the hours necessary to achieve the desired goals
  • Able to adapt to constant changing work assignments and fast paced work environment
