Digital Communications Systems Manager

SpaceX is looking for a Digital Communications Manager for its Hawthorne location with specific experience in satellite and wireless communications applications. The candidate will be required to manage a team of DSP and digital communication experts to assist with the design and modeling of space based high performance digital communication systems.   The candidate must have 7 years of digital communication experience, and have a significant track record of developing digital communication systems with a heavy emphasis on digital signal processing. The position requires both technical contributions as well as management responsibilities.

Technical Responsibilities:

As a digital communications systems manager you will analyze, design and test advanced digital communications systems, using combinations of RF blocks, FPGAs, and embedded software.  You will be responsible for developing algorithms for signal detection, signal acquisition, carrier tracking and coherent receiver design.

The job includes:

  • Modelling entire communication systems using Matlab, Python, C++ or similar tools.
  • Partitioning functions between HW and SW.
  • Develop Forward Error Correction algorithms such as BCH, LDPC, Turbo Codes and Viterbi Decoding
  • Multipath analysis, carrier tracking algorithm development and phase tracking under large Doppler shifts
  • Direct experience with digital coherent receivers, multirate filters architectures
  • Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum detection with very low Es/No in the presence of Doppler
  • Feed forward and decision feedback blind equalization algorithm development
  • IF sampling and Digital Quadrature demodulation
  • Verifying the performance of the different components and the full radio system in the lab.
  • Managing and mentoring other communication engineers on the team.
  • Scoping out projects and man power effort estimation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong theoretical skills in modern wireless communication systems and digital signal processing techniques.
  • Direct experience designing digital receivers for CPM waveforms and high order QAM waveforms.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of single and multi-carrier coherent receivers.
  • Experience in modelling and developing baseband radio circuits and software defined radios (SDRs) with a broad understanding of modulation and demodulation, data and frame synchronization, equalization and channel coding.
  • 5 years experience with communications modeling tools such as Matlab, Python, C++.
  • Experience in developing FPGA solutions and working with RF systems and protocol engineers.
  • Must be well rounded in mixed signal systems with a good fundamental understanding of RF circuits and systems.
  • Candidate must have good lab skills with hands on experience operating  vector network analyzers (VNA), spectrum analyzers and vector signal analyzers.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Masters of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Min 5 years of research and/or industry experience in design and modelling of digital communication systems.
  • Experience with modern wireless systems such 3G/4G cellular, cable or satellite physical layer solutions.
  • Understands RF system design such as SSPAs, LNAs, LNBs, Link Budgets, EMI/EMC, EM wave propagation
  • Generate of cascade performance prediction analyses (i.e. NF, Gain, IP3, IP2, 1-dB compression, spurious response, EVM, etc.) through frequency conversion
  • G/T,  cross-pol isolation, antenna pattern measurements

Additional Requirements:

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
