Director, Launch Operations at LC-39A, Cape
Overview:
- The Launch Operations Director plays a critical role at Launch Complex 39A, the newest launch pad for SpaceX. This individual will lead all activities related to launch operations and will drive the processing and preparation of Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9 launch vehicles. As we transition toward launching monthly, this individual will be a key player in successfully executing our launch manifest at Cape Canaveral.
Responsibilities:
- Lead all Launch-Site Activities for Launch Complex 39A. Activities will include Launch Pad construction, Pad activation, Flight Hardware Processing of the Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9 rockets and future Crew related Operations.
- Execute SpaceX Cape Canaveral’s Launch Manifest (baselined One Launch per month).
- Lead a team of 50+ Engineers, Technicians, and Business staff on a day-to-day basis
- May include acting as a Launch Director for SpaceX launches
- Interface with the Air Force (45th space wing) and NASA Launch Services Provider
- Oversee technical maintenance and engineering activities at the facility
- Lead and direct all vehicle/satellite processing and integration activities
- Perform pre and post launch operations on the vehicle and ground systems
- Help SpaceX achieve its long-term goal of creating the world’s first fully automated launch system capable of rolling the vehicle to the pad, raising it to position, fueling the vehicle, and executing a full launch sequence within a 1-hour time window
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
- Previous experience designing and/or integrating launch vehicles and satellite systems
- Experience leading teams of 20 or more engineers and technicians
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Advanced degree preferred in an engineering discipline
- Unfazed by major, abrupt changes in strategic direction.
- Previous experience designing and building complex ground or flight systems
- Experience using and troubleshooting ground control systems required for remote operations and instrumentation feedback
- Previous experience interfacing with government and commercial satellite operators
- Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
- Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
Additional Requirements:
- Must be willing to work significant overtime as needed
- Minimal travel may be required
