Engineering Development Technician, Manufacturing (Composites)

 

Overview:

The engineering technician will be a hands-on liaison with engineering, helping to carry out ideas from concept to reality. A strong background in composites, manufacturing, R&D, and qualification testing is desired.

 

Responsibilities:

  • The Engineering Development Technician will be responsible for hand layup, vacuum bagging, operating ovens and other equipment.
  • The technician will brainstorm with engineers and working with new materials. Work will include drilling, trimming, de-burring, grinding, operating a band saw, operating a mill, operating a lathe, operating saws and grinders, operating test equipment, polishing specimens for microscopy, using a microscope to evaluate specimens, lifting heavy objects, performing bonding.
  • The engineering technician must be independent, reliable, and flexible, able to accommodate for various engineering and production demands.
  • The technician will be tasked with creating basic work instructions using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and documenting work with pictures.
  • The position requires strong hands-on aptitude, as well as high attention to detail, ability to see and communicate detailed observations, and ability to solve problems.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of composite materials experience
  • High School diploma/GED or equivalent

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Proficient in hand layup and vacuum bagging
  • Proficient in preparing specimens for testing and/or performing testing
  • Able to interpret engineering drawings
  • Experience using power tools for cutting or drilling composites or metals
  • Proficient using measurement tools such as calipers
  • Experience performing composite coupon, sub-assembly, and assembly testing (proof, ultimate, strain, physical properties, chemical properties)
  • Experience preparing for and performing qualification tests
  • Experience working with engineers or scientists in a development environment
  • Experience using a microscope to evaluate specimens
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience assembling composite and composite/metallic structures including setup, bonding and fastener installation.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Must be able to climb on a ladder to reach shelved items
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
