Test Engineering Manager
Overview:
- The Test Engineering Manager plays a critical role in the day to day operations of the McGregor Rocket Development Facility. It will be your job to lead rocket propulsion testing and to ensure that SpaceX’s goals and objectives are being met. Production acceptance testing ensures that our products are ready to fly and execute the mission. Development testing is required to produce increased capabilities and efficiencies to meet our ever increasing expectations to revolutionize access to space. Engineers and technicians on your team will handle large volumes of cryogenic rocket propellants and high pressure gases. You’ll be responsible for handling, final integration and acceptance of test articles of numerous types and configurations. It’ll be a challenge each and every day.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the daily activities of your assigned area at the Rocket Development Facility
- Monitor ground preparation activities and hotfire test activities to ensure protocol is followed and expected results are met
- Help design, plan, fabricate, install, activate and operate rocket test facilities.
- Become subject matter expert on SpaceX Rocket Propulsion Hardware
- Plan and oversee facility maintenance
- Plan and actively manage the test facility schedule
- Identify opportunity for safety improvement and manage the operational safety of your assigned test unit
- Manage a diverse team of engineers who specialize in propulsion testing and structural component testing operations
- Learn and apply qualitative and quantitative methods to measure team effectiveness and performance
- Identify process improvement and modifications to develop strategies, increase efficiency, and improve upon existing company objectives
- Analyze and review data to ensure that processes and hardware are operating as expected
- Follow applicable local, state, and federal safety, environmental and system engineering principles
- Support Customer Interaction as required
- Travel as required to support rocket vehicle operations and field operations in the Hawthorne factory or the various launch sites
- Above all, remain dependable, which means be unfazed by ambiguity or major changes in strategic direction
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and a minimum of 7 years of applicable work experience
- At least 1 year of experience serving in a position with direct responsibility for the work of others
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering preferred
- 10+ years of applicable experience preferred
- Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent programs and be able to discuss configuration, execution, and results in a technical manner
- Knowledge of hazardous systems – cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, pyrophoric
- Knowledge of high pressure system design and handling
- Knowledge of rocket engine and/or vehicle systems beyond basic concepts – i.e. specifics of turbomachinery, injector design, etc.
- Experience using test instrumentation and control components
- Intermediate level in Microsoft OneNote, Visio, and Project
- Intermediate level in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience serving in a personnel manager role preferred
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to sit for long periods of time
- Ability to work at elevated heights
- General physical fitness is required for some work areas; flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required
- Physical effort including standing, lifting and carrying light weight such as materials or equipment (0 to 15 lbs.)
- Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
- Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
- Typically 50 hours per week, schedule varies depending on site operational needs, flexibility required
- Overtime is frequently required for particular tasks or test series
