About the job:

    • Twilio is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Infrastructure team.
    • This is a leadership role, reporting to the Sr. Director of Common Services, focused on nurturing and expanding a team of engineers, providing people management, and driving projects to successful, on-time delivery through our agile process.
    • As a successful candidate for this role, you have demonstrated a talent for balancing long-term strategy with short-term objectives.
    • You have a proven track record of facilitating high-performing teams in tactical execution of a development plan.
    • You have been a key part (as hiring manager or technical lead) of building and executing on a hiring plan.
    • You have managed team dynamics in a technical, high growth environment.
    • You have led teams through stressful situations and have demonstrated the ability to teach sound decision making.
    • Twilio is a company built by developers for developers. You must not only have the professional expertise to understand your team’s engineering and business challenges, but also the technical acumen to build great software.

Responsibilities:

    • The Engineering Manager role at Twilio is about shipping high-quality products and providing team leadership.
    • Take personal responsibility for the work delivered by your team.
    • Manage your direct reports in an empathetic, high-touch way, including weekly/bi-weekly 1:1s. Coach and unblock them on a daily basis. Encourage and teach them to drive to complete key objectives. Assist in their longer term career and skills development. Excite them with new challenges and opportunities.
    • Help your team create, maintain, own and operate your team’s data-centric systems and services in production.
    • Partner with the Technical Program Manager to break epics into smaller chunks and drive them to completion in a timely fashion.
    • Lead the Scrum process and facilitate product and architecture reviews.
    • Recruit new team members, own their onboarding, and make them successful.
    • Anticipate changing directions and priorities, and manage in the face of uncertainty.
    • Play an active role in fine-tuning Twilio's process with the rest of the R&D leadership.

Requirements:

    • Minimum of 5 years as a manager with a prior background in hands-on software engineering. You're not necessarily a software engineer today, but you've definitely written code before.
    • Proven track record as an engineering leader for a team with 5+ members.
    • Stellar communication, organization and management skills.
    • Deep knowledge of agile software development processes and tools like Git, Jenkins and Jira.
    • Solid understanding of continuous integration and deployment practices.
    • Enthusiasm for working in a high profile, fast-paced startup culture. We ship products on a daily basis, with tight schedules, small teams, and a very large user base.
    • Hands on. Passionate. Persistent. Creative. You get things done - you are a DOer.

Bonus points:

    • Passionate about data at scale, data communications and parallelized processing.
    • Basic to intermediate knowledge of data warehouse systems, data management, ETL and big data.
    • You still write code for fun.
    • You’re interested in a range of database technologies and use cases for relational, key-value and columnar data stores.
    • You have experience writing web applications and ETLs.
    • You’ve created software following agile software development practices.

    Perks:
  • Competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401k and life insurance.
  • An Amazon Kindle, $30/month to spend on books and a Twilio track jacket after demoing your first Twilio app in front of the company!
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Catered lunches and a weekly team dinner featuring invited technology and entrepreneurial speakers.
  • Excellent gear (we ❤ Apple computers and big monitors — two if you need 'em).
  • A strong belief in life/work balance.
