Lead Composite Technician
Overview:
- This position will lead a group of composite technicians and will be critical in the mission success of SpaceX as a whole. This will be a leader/contributor role that will have responsibility over other’s work, while also actively contributing to production of complex composite parts and materials.
Responsibilities:
Production schedule/daily routine
- Coordinate shop floor activity. Establish daily schedules, assign work based on individual’s skills, and monitor the workflow of the team.
- Monitor work order efficiency and clocking accuracy of the team.
- Accomplish production results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraisal of job results.
- Holds primary responsibility for maintaining accurate work order status, including entering of required data and notes.
- Ensures individual technicians adhere to processes and instructions as documented in work orders and specifications.
- Monitor time and attendance compliance of the team, and inform supervisor when employees are not adhering to company policies.
- Trimming and finishing of composite and composite metallic assemblies.
- Assembly of structures including setup, bonding and fastener applications.
- Make basic layouts on parts or assemblies in order to establish reference points and to check dimensions using calipers, micrometers, precision scales and torque wrenches.
- Must be able to work per engineering drawings as well as both written and verbal instructions and work with engineers to develop composite hardware fabrication and assembly processes/tooling.
- Perform product inspection and rework as required.
Improvement
- Review work instructions and make change recommendations when needed that will aid in cost reductions, as well as processes and efficiency improvement measures.
- Participate in root cause/corrective action analysis for quality and safety issues.
- Assist with follow up on workmanship issues.
Safety/5S
- Ensures a safe working environment is maintained at all times through ensuring team compliance with required PPE, understanding of JHA’s, ensuring compliance with hazardous waste policies, and identifying safety improvement actions.
- Engages the team to identify safety improvement actions and support the implementation of actions.
- Lead the team in achieving 5S goals and maintaining 5S standards, including maintaining appropriate FOD control and prevention in their area.
Training/Development
- Encourage employee development through coaching them in their work methods. Provide development and training opportunities for their team to progress within their skills matrix through excellent coaching and leadership skills.
Basic Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 3 years with layup, bonding or assembly of composites components and structures.
- Experience with composite tooling materials (Prepreg, wet layup).
- Read and interpret engineering drawings - understanding of drawing symbols, flag notes and general notes.
- Experience with various types of hand tools or hand-held power tools.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Previous experience in a leadership role in a manufacturing environment.
- Familiar with GD&T.
- Experience with lean manufacturing principles and methodology.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be willing to work significant overtime.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25lbs.
- Standing for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching are generally required to perform the functions of this position.
