As a Client Architect you’ll be the technical authority on products that are revolutionizing the software industry and helping teams collaborate and create that magic in delivering their best work. Think Nasa launching the Roveron Mars or Cochlear gifting children born deaf with the ability to hear, your work directly impacts the products they use to advance humanity. The primary focus of your role will be to own the broad technical direction of HipChat's clients and ensure they are evolving and sustainable for the long term. You'll need a strong technical prowess with incredible coding ability across a diverse set of languages and technologies, a deep understanding of architecture and a ability to foresee and plan for changes, and be a great communicator. You need to be able to translate your deep technical skills to influence other developers, product managers and senior managers to ensure the team understands the vision, is onboard with it, and is moving towards achieving the product’s ongoing goals. With the rapidly changing software industry, you’ll be constantly learning and improving your own skills and knowledge, which will ultimately help to grow our products and advance humanity through the power of software.

More about you

As an Android Engineer you'll be responsible for the development of our Android mobile application which is used daily by tens of thousands of users worldwide. We are looking for someone with the experience needed to create a polished and stable application that is a joy to use. You will be supported by robust backend systems, mature protocols, and an experienced team with a strong desire to build the best chat and collaboration platform on the market.

The engineers we’re seeking will have great experience across Java (specifically with the Android ADK), building mobile applications for Android, multi-threading, front-end web technologies (HTML/CSS/JS), Agile development, and will have a strong user empathy and sense of UI aesthetic (and bonus points if you've had exposure to XMPP/Jabber, IRC, or other chat protocols). Deep understanding of how to build performant, decoupled, testable, maintainable code. We’d love if you have a good breadth of knowledge across-the-board, coupled with a deep area of expertise. You should be one of those naturally curious types, always looking to improve things, love dabbling in your own side-projects and learning new skills that are not a necessarily part of your normal day job. You’re probably someone who enjoys sharing knowledge with team-mates, asking for help when they need it, and at the end of the day, thrive on writing great code.

More about this team

[New Relic] Senior Android Engineer

New Relic
Senior Android Engineer
Portland, Oregon

New Relic’s Mobile SDKs do something unique: they monitor application code as it runs on millions of end-user devices and show app developers where and why the app isn’t performing as expected.  If vague reports of app slowness and errors have ever driven you mad, you know the problem we’re solving. This is your chance to learn how Android APIs really work. You’ll build tools that mobile developers rely on every day to diagnose and tune their apps based on real production data, not guesses.

To work this magic, you will keep up with the latest trends in app development and explore the undocumented details of OS APIs and runtime environments.

At New Relic you’ll have the opportunity to:
  • Attend or host meet-ups,
  • Speak at conferences,
  • Blog about your work and what excites you, and
  • Invent the future.
Along with the fun comes serious work:
  • Learn the hidden differences between the Java, Dalvik, and ART runtimes,
  • Explore bytecode and JNI, and
  • Make time to check out new mobile platforms that everyone is just discovering.
Our small Mobile team owns the full stack, ensuring that the billions of metrics we collect every day make it to our servers and onto the screen with just the right presentation. We are inspired by lean startup and agile principles and believe every team member can accomplish great things. You’ll work with seriously talented and friendly engineers that love mobile and their teammates; people who will help you do the best work of your life every day.

Your code will run on hundreds of millions of devices inside of applications you don’t control. You’ll need to have creativity and gumption along with a natural curiosity for how software works. We expect you to be proud to ship great features while taking reliability, software craftsmanship, and developer experience seriously.

Keys to success
  • History of shipping things that matter to customers
  • Desire to collaborate with others and know how developers use your product
  • Experience building, shipping, and supporting Android applications
  • Interest in new languages, platforms, and ideas

Bonus points for expertise in Objective-C, Android-flavored Java, JNI/NDK, other mobile platforms, concurrency, networking, power management, shipped mobile apps, and mobile SDK experience. But we already know you’re a fast learner, so don’t worry if you’ve still got something to learn.

To apply

Kindly provide a cover letter telling us who you are and why this job, this product, and this company are the place for you, along with a resume that includes links to things you’re proud to have built!

We take the time to seriously consider all applicants. Please return the favor by being familiar with New Relic Mobile and telling us how you want to improve the product.

New Relic is the place where you can grow a career while innovating like a startup, where your ideas may become revolutionary new products in three months, and where engineers are happy to talk to each other about their work and play.

A little about us:

New Relic is a software analytics company that, on behalf of our customers, makes sense of billions of metrics about millions of applications, all in real time. Our comprehensive SaaS-based solution for web and mobile applications consolidates the performance monitoring data into a single, powerful interface. Our 90,000+ customers use New Relic every day to optimize more than three million applications.

New Relic is a San Francisco Best Places to Work award winner, an Oregon “Top Workplace” award winner, named a leader in the Gartner’s 2013 “Magic Quadrant” for APM companies, a Top 100 OnDemand Company, Best of SaaS (THINKStrategies), Top 100 Coolest Cloud Computing (CRN); 10 Cloud Management Companies to Watch (NetworkWorld) – the list of accolades goes on. More important than all of that: we provide challenging work, opportunities to learn, high quality teammates, a standard-setting product, and a company on the move.

Our office is in the tech mecca of Portland, with easy commute access and a plethora of good eats and great coffee. We provide competitive compensation (including stock options) and big-company benefits (medical, dental, etc.)— all while maintaining the energy, agility, and fun of a start-up. We can help with relocation and are open to H1-B transfers.

New Relic is most decidedly an equal opportunity employer. We eagerly seek applicants of diverse background and hire without regard to race, color, gender, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, individuals with disabilities, age, sexual orientation, protected veterans, or any other characteristic protected by law. Note: Our stewardship of the data of many thousands of customers means that a criminal background check is required to join New Relic.
