About Alphaworks

The Alphaworks mission is to empower passionate communities to become owners in the companies they love. Our thesis is that over time, this new kind of community owned business will lead to more profitable and lasting organizations.

We’re a small, passionate team of people who all work out of the betaworks studio in Meatpacking and wear multiple hats. Since Alphaworks is a super early startup, every day is different, and we’re learning new things all the time. We’re looking for very smart, motivated, hard working people to join our team and help us change the future of investing.

What we’re looking for

Our CEO has a finance (meaning very non-technical) background. This means that you’ll have a lot of freedom and responsibility in the technical decisions you make for the company. Our ideal candidate will find this environment invigorating.

Your approach:

  • You relish in figuring out ways to surprise and delight as part of an integrated product services team
  • Creative problem solving is in your DNA: you are good at brainstorming technical solutions with non-technical people
  • You understand the difference between prototyping and writing scalable code and are comfortable with the trade-offs
  • You can work in and maintain an established code base while implementing new tools and offerings
  • You thrive in an intense, loosely structured, fast-paced startup where we are trying new things every day
  • You have a can-do attitude, positive outlook and great sense of humor

In terms of skills and qualifications, you should:

  • be really, really smart
  • have solid experience building production level systems in Python / Flask / MySQL, particularly running on AWS
  • be familiar with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, SASS, JavaScript)
  • have experience working in regulated industries where data confidentiality is critical
  • ideally, have some financial services experience

[Prezi] Backend Engineer - Budapest

We are looking for a talented developer with a DevOps mindset to join our backend engineering teams.

These teams write and run the mission-critical backend services of Prezi. We use many technologies, have lots of users and work with tons of data.

Challenges:

  • Participate in building a microservice architecture which scales, routes around failure and lets us build complex systems out of small components.

  • Move everything into the cloud (AWS), rethinking the assumptions that no longer hold in our current architecture.

  • Help us build our emerging JVM based stack (built on the Netflix open-source stack , mostly in Scala), which will power our next generation of services.

  • Open source some of the awesome things we’re working on.

  • Develop and maintain existing backend services (mostly written in Python) to ensure they are efficient, reliable and secure enough for our many million users.

Requirements:

  • We are looking for full stack engineers who can pick up any technology and run with it.

  • Enthusiasm for devops: we write it, we run it!

  • Brave enough to try new technologies. You can’t survive here if you’re tied to a single stack.

  • A solid background in software development of large-scale systems.

  • We’re not looking for BoFH s. “ Plays well with others, cleans up after him/herself ” should apply to you.

  • Sysadmin experience and good old unix skills are a big plus.

  • We’re on-call for the systems we create. You won’t have to work at night if you did your job during the day (we rarely get woken up), but be prepared for automatic text messages and phone calls if you mess up.

What we offer you:

  • the chance to commit from day one

  • support improving your skills

  • people that will listen to your opinions and value them

  • the chance to work in our San Francisco office for a couple of weeks a year

  • the opportunity to go to tech conferences anywhere in the world

  • a really cool office environment to work in (or you can occasionally work from home if you feel like it)

  • free quality-food and a nice atmosphere all day long in the Prezi Bistro

  • the chance to receive stock options and become your own employer

About Poncho

Poncho is a weather-forecasting service built inside the betaworks studio. We want to make weather forecasts not only accurate, but also personal. If you have never used Poncho before, give it a shot. We can’t imagine life without it.

To really understand the personality and story behind Poncho, you should probably watch our founder Kuan Huang on MSNBC.

What we’re looking for

Our very first full time backend engineer, to help us build out the go-to weather service for the mobile generation. You should:

  • be really, really smart.
  • have a great sense of humor and a fondness for pop culture, gifs, and memes.
  • be comfortable in an intense, loosely structured, and fast-paced startup.
  • have 1-3 years of experience with Python, Django, AWS, and MongoDB.
  • ideally be familiar with Backbone, Grunt, and other front-end technologies.

You don’t have to be a weather nerd (none of us has an academic background in meteorology), but you should be as excited as we are about taking huge amounts of data and turning it into friendly, hilarious, useful pieces of information. (On that note, you’ll also get to work with the betaworks data science team, which is a treat in itself.)
