Avionics Integration Engineer
Overview:
- The avionics integration engineer will support the dragon spacecraft at the final phase of launch preparation and will work closely with the avionics department in Hawthorne. This person will support final assembly and integration of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.
Responsibilities:
- Avionics Liaison between Texas operations and the Integration and Design engineers in Hawthorne, CA. Responsible for avionics subsystem test readiness, avionics performance during hot fire acceptance tests, and avionics readiness for launch site shipping. Avionics subsystems include rocket engine controllers, Li-Ion batteries and power distribution systems, flight computers and navigation sensors, telemetry encoders and transmitters, and flight data acquisition systems
- Preparations for receiving all avionics hardware from Hawthorne, which involves Texas accommodations for out-of-sequence work and known anomalies on flight hardware and vehicle changes since last test article
- Defining, coordinating, and executing avionics integration activities in Texas, including wire harness installation, component installation or replacement, instrumentation installation, and checkouts
- Identification and resolution of all avionics issues during integration work and acceptance test series
- Create and maintain avionics-related flight software configuration files, Texas test scripts, Launch software configuration files, test procedures, and relevant vehicle test plan sections
- Monitor data during test operations and provide input to the team concerning the execution of test sequences, operation of the vehicles’ avionics systems, and readiness for critical test phases … “Avionics is Go!”
- Monitor, assess, and verify health and performance of avionics on the test articles by reviewing hot fire acceptance test data, creating and maintaining data reduction code, and compiling reports
- Avionics Liaison between Texas ground support engineering and the Integration and Design engineers in Hawthorne, CA
- Ensure each test stand has proper required grounding and lightning protection and maintain Texas related drawings for these matters
- Help plan, design, develop, and maintain all vehicle test and data acquisition equipment
- Identify, design, review, and build new harnesses and test equipment that will save Texas time
- Drive improvements to vehicle design or Texas test site equipment and procedures to avoid repeated issues, prevent anomalies before they cause further issues, and reduce integration and test setup time
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent area of focus required
- Candidates must have at least 3 years of combined project experience in the electrical engineering field; significant academic projects qualify
- Must have experience with hand tools (including: wrenches, drivers, torque, harness fabrication, soldering)
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Expert knowledge of analog, digital or mixed-signal design principles including designs using operational amplifiers, filters, and transistors
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Demonstrated practical knowledge of electromagnetic interference (EMI) principles and mitigation techniques
- Strong knowledge of and experience in analog to digital and digital to analog converters, power supply components and design, analog testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity, layout and grounding principles
- Understanding of computers and programming languages (C++, LabVIEW, and/or Python)
- Knowledge of high-reliability processes and related documentation practices
- Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
- Strong work ethic and drive to succeed
- Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
- Eagerness to apply practical electrical engineering techniques in a unique work environment to solve problems and facilitate testing
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand.
- Ability to work at elevated heights (up to 300 feet)
- Physical effort with climbing up and down stairs regularly throughout the day
- Physical effort with some handling of supplies or materials (0 to 50 lbs)
- Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, ice
- Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
- Minimum 50 hour work weeks, schedule varies depending on site operational needs, flexibility required
