About the job:

• In the past, Twilio managed less than one hundred servers in a single datacenter. Today we manage thousands of servers in multiple data centers. Tomorrow we will manage tens of thousands of servers in datacenters all over the world. We are growing exponentially and need your help.
• Whether you are a DevOp, System Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, or just plain System Administrator, we are looking for talented individuals who are interested in building and operating the next generation of our Cloud Platform. Twilio believes in Small Teams and Service Oriented Architecture. The “Twilio Application” is actually hundreds of services owned and operated by teams of five to seven individuals and deployed on a globally distributed system.
• As a member of the Cloud Operations Team you will partner with other Twilio teams using a multitude of technologies. You would do everything, including working on MySQL, configuring IPSEC Tunnels, helping with kernel or network performance tuning, troubleshooting VM issues, configuring monitoring, diagnosing and triaging production issues, working on our configuration management system, contributing to our continuous deployment environment and more.
• Twilio deploys most of our infrastructure in the cloud today. Over 99% of our instances live on public cloud providers like Amazon and Rackspace. We develop and utilize a variety of tools to deploy and manage that infrastructure.
• We are looking for a System Administrator who is comfortable shell scripting, but has no problem jumping into a higher-level language like Python or Ruby when a shell script just won't do.
• You will receive exposure to the unique set of challenges that come from operating a globally distributed service with a 100% availability requirement. Twilio infrastructure is the dial tone that never fails.
• Developing tools and automation is key to everything we do at Twilio. Any task we do more than twice is automated.​

Responsibilities:

• Help design, build, and manage our Global Cloud infrastructure:
  • Manage Linux CentOS 5 and 6 instances 
  • Write Chef cookbooks, providers, and recipes
  • Support MySQL 5.1, 5.5, 5.6
• Support our monitoring infrastructure:
  • Nagios for Alerting
  • Logstash and Elasticsearch for Log Aggregation
  • Our homegrown Anomaly Detection System
  • Sentry and Graylog2 for Exception Reporting and Alerting
  • OpenTSDB for Time Series Data and Trending
• Support our Amazon Web Services infrastructure:
  • Elastic Compute Cloud
  • Virtual Private Cloud
  • IAM Roles & Policies
  • Dynamo DB and Redshift
  • S3 and Cloudfront
• Support the Twilio Private Cloud, our global software defined network:
  • Cisco Virtual and Hardware Appliances
  • Basic TCP/IP networking and routing
  • VPN and IPSEC Tunnels
• Help write the next generation of provisioning and automation tools for deploying and managing cloud resources.
• Participate in on-call rotation; work with development teams to identify, resolve and triage production issues.
• Take part in our post-mortem process including ‘The Five Whys’. Focus on improving systems and processes. 

Requirements:

• You are proficient in Linux systems administration and understand all layers of Linux.
• You have in-depth experience deploying and maintaining monitoring tools (Nagios, Cacti, etc.).
• You are experienced in configuring network routing (NAT, TCP/IP), firewalls, VPN and DNS.
• You know what is involved in deploying and managing databases.
• You have solid experience writing shell scripts.
• You are familiar with deployment tools like Chef, Salt, and Puppet, or have rolled your own.
• You have some familiarity with one or more of the following: Amazon Web Services, Rackspace, Google Cloud, Openstack or any other public or private cloud environment.​

Bonus points:

• AWS experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
