[New Relic] Sr MySQL Database Engineer

New Relic
Sr MySQL Database Engineer
Portland, OR or San Francisco, CA

We’re looking for a highly-experienced Senior MySQL Database Administrator to join our Site Engineering team. This is a highly technical role that requires extensive MySQL experience, including thorough knowledge of MySQL internals. We’re running MySQL at world-class scale and expecting it to perform, sometimes at the limit, so deep understanding and an interest in tuning are critical. Our MySQL systems write over 200 billion application performance metrics a day to disk.

You’ll work as part of a small engineering team, and will focus on supporting the MySQL database eco-system that powers our APM, Servers, and Platform applications, and you will play a critical role in advising software engineering teams on scalability and performance best practices throughout the development process.

We’re a SaaS company who provide an analytics platform to clients, and so our data is our business. You’ll need excellent communication skills and a drive to improve scalability and performance across our MySQL tier.

As a part of the Site Engineering team you’ll be working with the engineers who build and support everything from the network to the deployment infrastructure in a fast-paced startup environment where things change rapidly, and where we’re constantly increasing our scale. We believe in automation for repeatability and efficiency and you’ll need reasonable skill in a major dynamic language.

You should be a highly motivated self-starter who can hit the ground running, a team player who knows how to share with others and learn from them, too.

Some responsibilities include:
  • Analyzing our existing tier on an ongoing basis and making recommendations about scalability and high availability changes.
  • Identifying tuning settings, query changes necessary to improve performance, availability, and reliability.
  • Supporting development teams in building features that perform at scale.
  • Working with the Site Engineering team to deliver new MySQL services in an automated, scalable way.
  • Assisting in the administration, management, and monitoring of all MySQL database systems.
  • Developing tools to improve repeatability and efficiency.
  • Administering the database backup tier and tooling.

Skills and experience needed to do the job:
  • 4+ years real world experience with MySQL.
  • Must possess a detailed understanding of internals, specifically InnoDB and alternative storage engines, high volume replication and partitioning.
  • Experience with MySQL 5.5-5.6, Percona XtraDB, MariaDB or other modern MySQL variants.
  • Experience with Percona XtraBackup.
  • Highly developed problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Strong Linux administration skills.
  • Proficiency in Ruby, Perl, or Python for database tooling. Go or Java also advantageous.
