Quality Manager, Vandenberg
Overview:
The Quality Manager at the Vandenberg rocket launch facility will lead the local team of quality professionals and ensure that we drive Quality processes through launch operations, with preparation of the vehicle at the final integration stage, and up to launch. As we increase the frequency of launches and work to achieve rapid reusability of our launch vehicles, this person will help ensure that we are driving Quality throughout launch operations and preparation.
Responsibilities:
- Leading and managing a staff of up to 10 employees and responsible for directing daily inspection activities of SpaceX Rockets and space craft/payloads in flight critical applications
- Leading and managing inspection activities, review of flight critical launch operational procedures, review/approve of anomaly & non-conformance resolution and documentation in a timely fashion.
- Ensuring that inspection systems, processes and equipment reliably deliver quality products that meet all requirements.
- Providing feedback and improvements for improved reliability, quality and risk reduction relative to Inspection and Quality processes.
- Assuring Quality Management System integrity and business process objectives are maintained. Provides support for internal and 3rd party Quality Management System audits.
- Participating and supporting in the Root Cause and Corrective Action process;
- Supports Quality Engineering statistical methodologies to ensure that safety, reliability, and process capability goals are achieved, maintained, and improved.
- Assuring the critical parameter process control within the production process, including the establishment of necessary equipment/layout requirements.
- Systematically driving the process control metrics that facilitate progressive reduction of inspection requirements.
- Establish departmental quality metrics. Actively manages the quality problem landscape in order to continuously improve the metrics themselves.
- Liaise as appropriate with test and production sites to drive improvements in quality, standardize quality and production processes and utilize quality network.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Quality Assurance, Manufacturing/Design Engineering, Systems integration or Launch
- Experience with Design for Manufacture and product development life cycle
- Experience with Quality Tools including root cause and corrective action, Quality Management System (QMS) and process auditing and statistical analysis of quality metrics.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Graduate degree in a technical or management field preferred.
- Excellent communication to all levels of the organization, team-building skills, and the ability to influence.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced/cross-functional environment.
- Must be able to establish priorities, work independently and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
- ASQ certification (CQM, CQE), RAB certified/trained auditor is preferred
- Employee management experience preferred.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to travel to the various SpaceX sites is essential
- Overtime is frequently required for particular tasks or launch campaigns
- Typically 50 hour work weeks, schedule varies depending on site operational needs, flexibility required
- Must pass Cape Canaveral Air Force background check
