Why is Geo important at Airbnb?
On the Geo team we build the infrastructure that powers all of our geographical knowledge, and we build products on top of that infrastructure.
Location information is a key component of the travel experience. Engineers in the Geo team built our neighborhoods pages and our geo-serving infrastructure. We’ve worked directly with cartographers to map different neighborhoods of the world. Our data feeds into the search index so that users can find the right listings in different neighborhoods, and our neighborhood pages help users decide where they want to stay.
We’re now working on the next generation of that infrastructure and developing a few new products that use that data.
What are examples of work that Geo engineers have done at Airbnb?

We built the geo-database that holds all the boundaries our cartographers have mapped for different neighborhoods in the world.

We integrated with our photography team so we could source and then serve high-quality photos for different neighborhoods.
