Why is Search Important at Airbnb?

Airbnb is revolutionizing the way the world travels and Search is an integral part of the experience. Our systems serve millions of requests every day with the goal of producing the best possible results for every user in any context. We are managing the most expansive and diverse travel destination directory in the world (over 800,000 listings worldwide and growing fast).

Airbnb doesn’t offer one-size-fits-all experiences and the challenges we face in Search are unique to the industry, requiring novel solutions. How do we make the comparison process manageable to the user given that we offer more choices than any other accommodation site? How do we deal with uncertain information about listings and their availability? How can we incorporate trust and reputation signals into our relevance formula?

We’re building an engineering team that can produce what teams ten times of our size do. Our team owns everything from infrastructure to ranking to user experience. We love working on challenging problems and are passionate about building the best Search product in the travel industry.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build the next generation of Search features and infrastructure
• Improve the quality of our search results and conversion rate
• Help us tackle new challenges, like discovery and personalization

The following experience is relevant to us:

• Real-world expertise with Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Recommendation Systems
• Experience working with large, custom search systems
• Strong Java experience
• Experience with Hadoop/Hive/Cascading
• In-depth Lucene expertise
• Strong CS fundamentals
• Rigor in A/B testing, automated testing, and other engineering best practices
• Exposure to architectural patterns of large, high-scale web applications
