Senior System Engineer (Linux), Outbound Messaging
We're looking for an experienced system engineer to help the site-reliability team maintain our fast growing mail services and ensure that our millions of ResearchGate users get transactional notifications on time. You will take one of our most vital tasks to the next level by optimizing and improving our mail servers. This includes improving reliability of our mail transfer agents and optimizing our mail queue. Advanced knowledge of mail server configuration and maintenance, as well as networking and Linux system management, is required. This is a full-time position based at our main office in Berlin, Germany.
Responsibilities
- Profile and monitor all parts of our infrastructure related to outbound user communication
- Improve reliability of our entire mail pipeline, from creation to delivery
- Implement technologies to enhance trust in message integrity and sender identity
- Ensure that our millions of users can communicate reliably and receive notifications instantly
- Detect and diagnose bottlenecks in our mail systems early on and be able to resolve them quickly
- Work effectively with other teams to ensure that mail services meet future requirements and can scale
Requirements
- At least 4 years of experience in managing outbound messaging
- Extensive practice with mail transfer agents (MTA), preferably Postfix
- Experience in debugging and improving interaction between application and MTAs
- In-depth knowledge of mail communication protocols, especially SMTP
- Hands-on experience with building reputation, trust and security in mail communication
- Familiarity with technologies such as Sender Policy Framework (SPF), Sender ID, Domain Keys and DNS based authentication of named entities (DANE)
- Strong knowledge of *nix systems
- Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to collect data, establish facts, and arrive at valid conclusions
- Very good command of English, German is a plus
- Experience with message queues and databases is advantageous
- Knowledge of configuration management tools like Puppet or Chef is also a plus
