Crew Displays & Procedures Engineer
Overview:
SpaceX is building the world’s next human spaceflight capability right now. The SpaceX Crew Operations group is focused on revolutionizing spaceflight crew operations by providing Dragon crews with 21st century space suits, a modern user interface, and cutting-edge crew provisions and equipment, while ensuring crew health and safety, minimizing training requirements, and satisfying the needs of NASA flight crews. We are looking for excellent engineers who have a passion and demonstrated interest in human spaceflight and who are eager to define how the next generation of spacefarers travels to space.
The Crew Displays and Procedures team is focused on the development and definition of cockpit displays content and user interactions, crew operational practices, and crew procedures. The team will also evaluate crew displays interfaces and procedures using human test subjects, with the goal of making the safest, most intuitive, easy-to-fly space vehicle ever developed. We are looking for an innovative engineer, experienced with spacecraft systems design and operations, cross-discipline collaboration, and design of human interfaces, with exceptional communication and organization skills.
Responsibilities:
- Becoming an expert on Dragon systems design and operation
- Defining and evaluating crew displays user interfaces
- Developing and testing of crew operations procedures
- Defining Dragon astronaut operational practices
- Leading crew-oriented human subject studies for crew procedure verification and evaluation of crew displays
- Interfacing with NASA subject matter experts and astronauts
- Serving as primary advocate and representative for future flight crew to the SpaceX engineering community
- Participating in Dragon Mission Operations training, with the goal of taking an operational role in future spaceflight missions
Basic Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in an engineering or science discipline
- At least 2 years of operational experience (e.g. spacecraft, piloting, diving, firefighting, military)
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Master’s degree or PhD in an engineering or science discipline
- Technical knowledge of spacecraft systems and operations (e.g. communications, orbital mechanics, avionics, propulsion, thermal control, life support systems)
- Experience in human interfaces (e.g. flight controls, human-computer interaction)
- Flight test experience (flight test pilot or flight engineer)
- Experience or training in human factors and testing of human subjects
- Excellent communications skills and technical writing proficiency
- Highly self-motivated
Additional Requirements
- Willingness and ability to work at odd hours to support flight operations
