Human Factors Engineer
Overview:
SpaceX is building the world’s next human spaceflight capability right now. The SpaceX Crew Operations group is focused on revolutionizing spaceflight crew operations by providing Dragon crews with 21st century space suits, a modern user interface, and cutting-edge crew provisions and equipment, while ensuring crew health and safety, minimizing training requirements, and satisfying the needs of NASA flight crews. We are looking for excellent engineers who have a passion and demonstrated interest in human spaceflight, and who are eager to define how the next generation of spacefarers travels to space.
The Human Factors team is focused on human mechanics, crew provisions and supplies, interface usability, task analysis, and human-in-the-loop evaluations and testing. We are looking for an innovative engineer, experienced with task analysis, to identify and categorize flight crew activities required for nominal and off-nominal operation, to develop human-in-the-loop test procedures, and to lead human-in-the-loop evaluations, testing, and analysis.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinating with engineers across SpaceX technical teams to perform in-depth crew task analysis in support of demonstrations and tests to verify final design
- Developing test plans and crew workload and usability evaluations in support of a crew-centric vehicle
- Interfacing with NASA subject matter experts, test engineers, and astronauts
- Facilitating human-in-the-loop testing, including familiarization, training, and repeated trails
- Analyzing human-in-the-loop test results and applying test outcomes to requests for design changes as necessary
- Serving as primary advocate and representative for future flight crews to the SpaceX engineering community
- Participating in Dragon Mission Operations training, with the goal of taking an operational role in future spaceflight missions
Basic Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in an engineering or science discipline
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Master’s degree or PhD in an engineering or science discipline
- Experience with task analysis
- Experience or training in human factors and testing of human subjects
- Experience in development and evaluation of human interfaces (e.g. flight controls, human-computer interaction, workspace analysis, ergonomics)
- At least 2 years of operational experience (e.g. spacecraft, piloting, diving, mountaineering, firefighting, military)
- Strong communication skills and technical writing proficiency
- Highly self-motivated
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to work at odd hours to support flight operations
