Propulsion Systems Analyst

Overview:

SpaceX’s current and future missions, both manned and un-manned, have created the need for a dedicated Dragon Propulsion Systems Analyst to perform system level propulsion fluid analyses to support development trades studies of the Crew Dragon Propulsion system.   Initially this position will be focused on the Crew Dragon Propulsion system but will support Dragon Propulsion Systems as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will work with Propulsion Engineers to develop Cargo Dragon, the US delivery spacecraft to the International Space Station, and Crew Dragon, the world’s most advanced manned capsule
  • Anticipate needed analyses, and provide input throughout the design cycle
  • Assist in the organization and enhancement of integrated system models
  • Seek out and evaluate state-of-the-art analysis techniques and tools
  • Review propulsion analyses across Dragon & the entire Falcon 9 vehicle
  • Mentor junior members of the team
  • Generate and maintain Dragon propulsion fluid network model in SINDA/FLUINT and run trade studies that help drive Dragon propulsion system architecture decisions
  • Trade studies to include both gas and liquid component sizing, system pressure drop, pressurization, fast fluid transients such system initialization, engine startup and shutdown
  • Work closely with engine and propulsion component responsible engineers to understand how respective components operate and gather inputs needed for accurate fluid modeling
  • Assist in performing non-reactive sub-scale propulsion system tests, correlate data back to fluid model using Matlab scripts and Excel spreadsheets
  • Analyze engine hot fire, propulsion module and flight data.  Help investigate test anomalies.
  • Help update propulsion system fluid schematics and provide input to propulsion system architecture

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • BS in Mechanical, Aero/Astro Engineering or Physics.
  • Overall exposure to propulsion systems and components.
  • Strong fluids background
  • MATLAB skills

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

 

  • MS or Ph.D in Mechanical, Aero/Astro Engineering or Physics Preferred.
  • Highly preferred experience with SINDA/FLUINT
  • Experience with spacecraft propulsion systems a plus
  • Experience with hypergolic propellants a plus
  • Strong interest in spacecraft propulsion
