Mechanical Engineer - Composites
 
Responsibilities:

  • Provide insight into the design of tooling and equipment, from development to full volume production including material selection and standardization of componentry, to support the Composites Production Department.
  • Tooling design, improvement recommendations based on analysis and data.
  • Develop and Implement standard practices for specifying new and upgraded tooling.
  • Develop robust plans to ensure that our equipment and machine capacity is developed in line with volume production requirements.
  • Provide detailed analysis for the appropriation of capital and ROI.
  • Manage resources, plan, and interface with other production groups including external vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technicians.
  • Resolve manufacturing discrepancies and interface with the quality team to implement cost effective solutions.
  • Support the composites production department to develop efficient ways of finishing parts. For example: the design and development of vacuum fixtures, trim templates, bond tools, etc, aiding in the integration of components to sub-assemblies and sub-assemblies to the vehicle. 

 
Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree.
  • 3 years of experience in a composites design role.
  • 3 years of experience designing and fabricating metallic and non-metallic tooling used for composite manufacturing.

 
 Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Solid understanding of composite layup practices, including medium and high temperature curing prepregs, wet layups and VARTM.
  • Degree in a Mechanical, Aerospace, or Industrial engineering field.
  • Experience taking products through development cycle to full volume production.
  • Basic understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines, including mills, lathes, manual and CNC. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Hands on composite fabrication experience - layup, trim, assembly.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly.
  • Experience with Siemens NX (UG) and Teamcenter CAD and PDM systems is preferred.
  • Structural analysis experience.
  • Process development, facility and line layouts.
  • Lean Manufacturing Tools, SMED, Kanban, OEE and 5S as it pertains to capital equipment and tooling.

 
Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work all required hours, shifts, and weekends, as necessary.
